Give a kid a sticker to paint the world!

For the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, the artist Yayoi Kusama created a large domestic environment, complete with locally sourced furniture and ornamentation, all of which has been painted completely white. Over the course of the exhibition during the two weeks, the room is gradually obliterated.

The museum’s smallest visitors were given thousands upon thousands of colored dot stickers and were invited to collaborate in the transformation of the space, turning the house into a vibrantly mottled explosion of color. The space changing measurably with the passage of time as the dots accumulate as a result of thousands and thousands of collaborators.

But you might be surprised to know that it is celebrated in other parts of the world as well: In Barcelona and other towns of Catalonia it is one of the most important days.

Here streets are decorated for days, little booths are built and people go out in the streets of spring to spend a great day. Traditionally men offer red roses to women and women return the favor giving a book as a gift. This might be the day with the most book sells in the whole year. On Passeig de Gràcia, little side streets and on the impressive Ramblas all the way from Plaza Cataluña to the ocean front, you fill find parades and people celebrating.

5 tips for designing a badge

Maybe one of the most effective ways to explain the difference between creating a badge instead of a canvas is giving the movies example.

Think in yout favorite movie. Its perfectly integrates opening credits, its exactly measured character introduction, its action scenes, adventure, love situations. Even its amazing final twist during the last minutes…

ok, now try to put all this in a 15 seconds ad.

With badges the things are similar. Your creativity and tecnique is as important as your synthesis and space optimization capability.

Today, we’re trying to give some tips so you can give the best of you in every design!

____________________________________________________________________

1.- Don’t get obsessed with details.

Badges are, in general, very small products in which you won’t aprecciate those three tones of green you used painting your character’s eye. Or the seagull that flies over that backgrounded sea. In fact, it’s easy that looks like a stain in your drawing.

Try to compress your idea to its most essencial idea. It will look so much nitid and attractive.

__________________________________________________________

2.- Use plain and flashy colors.

In similar way to previous advice, most of the time ‘less’ means ‘more’. Plain well-defined colors will make your design easier to appreciate. You can use saturated, flashy colors too… draw everyone glances!

_____________________________________________________________________

3.- It’s not all about your drawing technique.

Most of the badges we see while walking in the street wouldn’t be exposed in an art gallery. People usually wear them for telling their likes, habits or aspirations… they try to transmit something, this is their true goal.

You don’t need to be a great illustrator. A quote, a word, a simple drawing… you just need a little bit of inspiration to achieve a good design. If you are an awesome artist too… even better!

_____________________________________________________________________

4.- Look beyond the circle.

The design of a badge doesn’t need to end in its surface, why not going further?

Divide your creation in different badges to create a jiraffe’s neck, or the Eiffel tower, for example.

Give it an extra function. Why not doing a button-badge that really buttons your kerchief? And waht about an eye so any object in which you put it come to life?

Don’t let appearance fools you. Bring it to the next level, beyond that small needled circumferenceand give your creation that ‘extra thing’ that will make it special.

_____________________________________________________________________

5.- Use proper tools.

It’s difficult to do a good job without them. And designing in a computer, it’s not an exception. Maybe you prefer to do your design the traditional way: pencils, markers, pens or brushes. Even then, you’ll need to digitalize it after, or make some retouch.

Use a good scanner to digitalize your drawings. No cell pics.

If you can, get some image editor like Photoshop or Illustrator. You cand find free alternatives like Gimp too, even free online alternatives like Pixlr. This programs will be very useful for design and retouch.

Finally, it would be a good idea to download any of our Camaloon templates so you can use it as a good base when you begin your work.

You can even go the easy way doing your whole design directly in our Atelier!

The game for the fridge

At Camaloon we have created a new game: A fridge-magnet game with Pirates!

The pirates are invading our kitchen and fighting against the Royal Navy. With this funny role play came you or your kids get to decide how the story ends. Who gets to reign the Seven Sea?

The fridge-game ‘Pirate Attack’ was created for everybody who loves to tell tales! It’s a great gift and an awesome decoration for your own house. Watch this short video to find out how we like to play with our pirates:

Fridge magnet game: Pirate Attack

It is a calm day at sea around the Woukiakii island, the sun is shining bright, the waves undulate slowly to the sounds of the ukulele player on the beach and the turtles are laying lazily in the sand. As time goes by the noises and laughters coming from the beach are becoming weaker and the sun is sinking giving a red touch to the bright blue sky.

Find out more about this new product: Camaloon’s Pirate Attack

It is with red in the clouds that a loud sound of gunfire bursts in the air not far off the coast. A fierce looking ship with waiving sails and a colorful flag hissed proudly all the way on the top of the mast is gliding rapidly. On board the crew is in tumult: a young lady is running excitedly from one side of the ship to the other holding her sword high up above her head, a skinny boy is mopping the wooden blanks while two older men are talking agitatedly about directions, a crazy compass needle and coordinates.

And right when everyone on board is busy taking care of the daily tasks that keep a ship afloat and alive, another vessel silently and suspiciously approaches. And with the new boat a strong wind rises, the red in the sky becomes more vivid and clouds gather up darkening the atmosphere just like a messenger carrying bad news.

It is the pirates with their dreadful ship who scare the seven seas and attack the rich vessels. It doesn’t take long till the Royal Marine acknowledges the presence of the the scary fighters. From the distance they can here the the scream that call for the battle and with them cannons being prepared to shoot the deadly bombs. No other choice for the Royal Ship than to get ready for the defense.

But the rest of the story is still to tell, you will decide who wins this struggle for the dominance of the seas. And it is you who tells it over and over again. With this new game created by Camaloon you can spend your days in the kitchen playing with Pirate Attack on your fridge.

After months dedicated to custom buttons and magnets we have decided to embark on a new adventure and together with the artist Ismurg we have created this game made of fridge magnets!

Pirate Attack consists of a DinA4 playboard (removable vinyl sticker) with the two vessels and one island as a background and 16 different characters: fierce pirates, servile sailormen and other sea creatures to build a new story every day.
